William C. Graham
William C. Graham is a Roman Catholic priest, theologian, educator, author, and speaker whose career has spanned nearly five decades of pastoral ministry, higher education, and theological scholarship. Ordained for the Diocese of Duluth, Minnesota, in 1976, he retired from active parish ministry in 2024 after serving as pastor of St. Michael Parish in Duluth for ten years. Throughout his vocation, he has been recognized for his commitment to helping individuals and institutions engage the Catholic intellectual tradition with depth, compassion, and intellectual rigor.
Father Graham earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Education from the University of St. Thomas, master's degrees in Theology and Liturgy from Saint John's University and the University of Notre Dame, and a Ph.D. in Historical Theology from Fordham University. His doctoral dissertation, Half Finished Heaven: The Social Gospel in American Literature, was later published and established his enduring interest in the relationship between faith, culture, and public life. As a Presidential Scholar and Teaching Fellow at Fordham, he received numerous academic honors that launched a distinguished career in higher education.
Over more than thirty years in academia, Father Graham served as professor, department chair, program director, and scholar-in-residence at several Catholic institutions, including The College of St. Scholastica, Lewis University, Caldwell University, and the Collegeville Institute. He developed innovative academic programs in Catholic Studies and Pastoral Ministry, led curriculum initiatives, and became a respected voice on Catholic identity in higher education. His teaching and mentoring influenced generations of students preparing for ministry, scholarship, and leadership.
A prolific author, Father Graham has written and edited numerous books on theology, spirituality, Catholic culture, morality, and pastoral life. His works include The Catholic Wedding Book, Clothed in Christ, Here Comes Everybody: Catholic Studies in American Higher Education, A Catholic Handbook, 100 Days Closer to Christ, and Common Good, Uncommon Questions. His writings have appeared in leading Catholic publications including America, National Catholic Reporter, Commonweal, Worship, Ministry & Liturgy, Listening: Journal of Religion and Culture, and the Duluth News Tribune. He also served for sixteen years as Assistant Editor of Listening: Journal of Religion and Culture and has contributed hundreds of articles, essays, reviews, and homilies exploring theology, ethics, liturgy, literature, and contemporary social issues.
An accomplished lecturer and retreat leader, Father Graham has presented throughout the United States on subjects including Vatican II, Catholic higher education, moral theology, spirituality, liturgy, Catholic social teaching, and the relationship between faith and culture. His work has consistently sought to build bridges between academic theology, parish life, and the broader public conversation.
In addition to his academic and pastoral work, Father Graham has served on numerous educational, ecclesial, and community boards, advised curriculum development projects, contributed to broadcast media, and remained an active advocate for thoughtful engagement with the challenges facing both the Church and society. His lifelong ministry reflects a deep commitment to scholarship, pastoral care, intellectual curiosity, and the conviction that faith flourishes when it is accompanied by honest inquiry, compassion, and hope.
