As the Morning Rising is a new novel by Mary Frances Coady, a Canadian friend and colleague of mine of long standing. I’ve read and appreciated other books by her, but this is the first of her fiction I’ve read. The story, one of a trilogy, takes place in a cloistered convent
between 1959 and 1965 and is an excellent look into hidden lives, monastic discipline and obedience. The story opens a window into the kinds of lives and customs and rules that Vatican II transformed with its call to aggiornamento, the updating or throwing open of windows called for by Pope John XXIII. Mary Frances is an excellent writer, and this novel is a very good read.
